Microdermabrasion Jacksonville FL
Some of my favorite salon treatments are those that are associated with exfoliating my skin. In the autumn and winter period, I preform a series of acid peels but in the spring and summer I prefer a more gentle procedure on my face.
The most harmless method of exfoliating skin cells in the warmer months, in my personal opinion, is microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a mechanical peeling process rather than chemical peeling on the skin.
If you are not familiar with the microdermabrasion procedure and you are interested in salon facial treatment, read on.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a method of high-tech skin exfoliation using a special device that has a rough tipped nozzle that exfoliates the skin and a suction system to draw away dead cells. There are several types microdermabrasion technology such as devices that use alumina crystals or others that use diamond tips.
Nozzles with a different calibers of abrasives can be used. A specialist will determine the depth of the effects of the device based on the thickness of the upper layer of skin and what conditions are being treated. An individualized approach is applied to each patient.
Microdermabrasion is gentler than laser dermabrasion or chemical pealing. That is one of the reasons why this procedure is becoming increasingly popular in many salons across the country.
The intensity and depth of are controlled by regulating the vacuum pressure, as well as the individual selection of nozzles. For example, to perform a microdermabrasion treatment on the face, a nozzle with a small degree of granularity is used. Whereas to treat scars, post-acne and striae, a coarser nozzle is usually used. On average, the series of treatments with a diamond exfoliation tip is around 4-6 procedures with an interval of 1-2 weeks.
The procedure usually takes from 20 to 40 minutes.
In order to maintain the wonderful after effects of facial microdermabrasion it is recommended to perform additional procedures every two to three months after your initial series. Depending on your skin condition and the nature of the problem being treated, more procedures may be needed. For example, to get rid of pesky stretch marks, post-traumatic and acne scars, a series of of 10 to 20 procedures is recommended.
Microdermabrasion is painless due to the microscopic size of the abrasive particles that are used on the nozzle. Therefore, you don’t need to worry about discomfort or pain during the procedure. The upper layer of the epidermis is cleaned quickly and the rejuvenation effect can be felt immediately.

What is the difference between dermabrasion and microdermabrasion?
The term “dermabrasion” refers to a treatment that removes one or more upper layers of the skin mechanically, usually using a laser device. It is used exclusively for cosmetic purposes. It is especially beneficial in reversing the formation of deep scars, the removal of minor skin defects and tattoo removal.
Microdermabrasion however, is a slightly different process using similar concepts. The difference is that microdermabrasion is performed in a gentler way using different devices on the top layers of the skin only.
The reasons for getting dermabrasion vs microdermabrasion treatments are also different. Dermabrasion is used to remove larger defects on the skin while microdermabrasion is used to rejuvenate the skin, giving you a younger and healthier appearance.
Types of dermabrasion:
- Diamond: This is performed using a nozzle that uses a jet of fine diamond spray. This technique is also called microdermabrasion. This is the most painless and gentlest of all forms of dermabrasion. It is used to cleanse and rejuvenate the face of dead cells and can even eliminate fine wrinkles.
- Laser: A device using a laser beam will affect the top layers of the skin, cleansing the upper and middle layers. It can be used to eliminate scars and stretch marks, and tattoos. It is considered a minimally invasive treatment and there is a slight recovery period after this type of procedure.
- Mechanical dermabrasion: This is a is deep exfoliation of the skin which is done in several stages. During this procedure, a device is used to simply scrape the upper layer of the skin, contributing to the activation of the regeneration process and a complete renewal of the skin. This treatment can eliminate scars from burns, old stretch marks, keloid scars, and even tattoos.
Microdermabrasion facial steps
Before starting the procedure, the skin is prepared for the treatment with a deep cleaning. Usually a gel scrub with fruit acids is applied for several minutes, however, depending on the type of skin, the prep may vary. Then, an apparatus with a diamond-tipped wand with a small and powerful suction is used. The esthetician rubs the wand over the entire face (except for the area around the eyes) several times. The more passes of the device, the more exfoliation will occur on the skin.
Microdermabrasion is not considered to be painful and shouldn’t be uncomfortable when preformed correctly. Microdermabrasion can even be performed on patients with dry, sensitive, and rosacea prone skin. Immediately after the procedure, you may experience some redness, but this redness should come down in about 15-20 minutes. You will immediately notice that your skin will become incredibly smooth and soft.
Some of the esthetic problems solved with microdermabrasion are the following:
- Oily skin with large pores.
- Post-Acne Hyperkeratosis (excessive thickening of the stratum corneum)
- Hyperpigmentation Scars and stretch marks, traces after burns, tattoos
- Prevention of the appearance of fine wrinkles
- Skin texture smoothing
- Facial cleansing
- Light skin pigmentation
- Improves microcirculation
Things that microdermabrasion can not be used to treat are:
- Fine and deep wrinkles, skin folds
- Scar removal
- Deep skin creases
- Sever acne,
- We recommend not to start procedures before age 23-24.
Microdermabrasion after care
After a microdermabrasion treatment, a lengthy recovery period is usually not required. Your skin will immediately recover after the procedure and you will be able to return to your normal lifestyle.
After the procedure, we recommend to avoid sun exposure for a week, just to avoid burning on the freshened skin. We also recommend not to use alcohol based lotions. Be sure to use a sunscreen with a high SPF for protection from ultraviolet rays.
Remember, the deeper the dermabrasion treatment the more preparation, care during the exfoliation process and recovery time is needed after each session. With deeper dermabrasion treatments skin may have redness and inflammation for a longer period of time during the recovery process.
About 2-3 days after microdermabrasion your skin might being to peel. But, again, this is unlike a chemical peeling which causes the skin comes off in large flakes. To make microdermabrasion peeling less noticeable we recommend not to use toners or powders, and foundation. These types of products will emphasize this normal peeling process. My peeling normally goes away in three days, but depending on how often you do the procedures, the process may take a little longer. I hope this information was beneficial to .
