Should women shave their face?

Shaving Your face_ Seriously, Why_

It sounds rather strange, but it turns out that dermaplaning is becoming a more and more popular way of taking care of your face. Now, not only considered an Asian tradition, ordinary and famous women are beginning to shave their faces.

DERMAPLANING - kao sori or facial hair removal with a razor is a process that involves scraping the surface layer of skin and hair at an angle of 45 degrees. This procedure allows you to achieve smooth and even skin.

This interesting technique for face shaving came to us from Japan around the year 2010. Now you can find dermaplaning in almost any salon there. In Europe, the procedure has become very popular by make-up artists Huda Kattan and Lisa Eldridge, who posted a video showing that they shaved their faces.

Then Sephora launched its own products for dermaplaning and the trend was a household term. Legend has it that Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe and Marlene Dietrich also enjoyed shaving their faces and said they liked how their makeup set on their skin after the procedure.

Dermaplaning Exfoliation

As you already might know, the process of dermaplaning is in reality a type of exfoliation, which helps to remove dead cells and smooth the surface of the skin. The idea of using a razor-scalpel across your face on your own seems pretty scary, but in reality you are just shaving off the fluffy “peach” fuzz.

Dermaplaning as a method of exfoliation has been used in the aesthetic world for many years, but at the same time, many people that visit salons do not even know that this service exists and that it is quite affordable. So, often when people hear the word dermaplaning, they tend to associate the term with a procedure known as microdermabrasion, so many will not even consider this service as a possible method of cleansing the skin or treating small scars or other minor cosmetic defects.

Microdermabrasion is a more complex medical procedure. Dermaplaning, on the other hand, does not carry the same risks since it is similar to a simple shaving. Skin becomes smooth, absorbs products better, and allows makeup to lay more evenly.

Japanese Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning, like many other strange trends in skin care, came to us from Japan, a country where smooth glossy skin reigns. Japanese women tried the new method back in 2011-2012, then it became popular among European bloggers and only in the last few years has it come to the US.

Foundation can be applied on smooth skin more evenly, ceasing to “cling” to hairs and shade better.

Over time, beauty bloggers have found that dermaplaning is also a wonderful way of natural exfoliation. The blade removes dead cells and polishes the stratum corneum.

They even developed standards for dermaplaning: bloggers advise using a razor with one thin blade (although an ordinary disposable one will work), keep it at an angle of 45 degrees and move strictly in the direction of hair growth. The procedure should be done once every few weeks.

Dermaplaning Procedure

Before dermaplaning, cleansing and preparation before the procedure are important to avoid bacteria and inflammation. Make sure that you go to a competent specialist for the procedure.

After prepping, the esthetician will gently shave the face with a scalpel for about 15-30 minutes. If everything is done correctly, you will have removed your peach fuzz and the upper layer of the epidermis, which consists mainly of dead cells.

Estheticians do not recommend doing the procedure yourself.  Home dermaplaning blades are not as sharp as professional blades. Using unsharpened blades could cause irritation as you would have to press repeatedly on the skin to remove the fuzz. In addition you have to be extra careful so as not to cut yourself.

Negative effects of the procedure:

Since the skin barrier becomes more vulnerable after dermaplaning, it is recommended to be extra careful after the procedure. For example, a mask with hyaluronic acid and a nourishing cream could be used.  Also, the skin could become more susceptible to burning from the sun, so don’t forget to use sunscreen.

Do not shave your face if you have inflammation, keratosis, eczema, rosacea, or herpes. Dermaplaning should not be recommended for women with sensitive skin.

What are the benefits of dermaplaning?

  • Naturally remove hair on the cheeks or above the lip.
  • Improve your complexion 100% painlessly.
  • Smoothen your skin. Even effective for people with very problematic, oily skin.
  • Cosmetic care products are better absorbed and generally work better on the skin that has received the procedure.
  • Makeup sets and lasts longer and better on the skin.

Since dermaplaning is a very fast, inexpensive, and easy procedure with minimal side effects, it quickly gained popularity among cosmetic medical workers in Western countries. Using a scalpel and a delicate touch simply works wonders: a cosmetologist simply scrapes away dead cells from the surface of the skin leaving it with a healthy, radiant look. However, the cosmetologist must carefully monitor the process of “scraping” and act with surgical accuracy.

Dermaplaning can be done twice a month and the procedure can be carried out as often as hair appears.
