What Does Micro Needling Do For Your Skin

Our skin is a reliable protective barrier that protects the body from harmful elements from the outside, and our skin copes with it perfectly. But this same feature of the skin creates problems with the penetration of beneficial substances applied to the skin for therapeutic purposes. Statistics show that only 0.3% of the total number of superficial therapeutic agents penetrate the skin. However, cosmetology does not stand still and every year more and more effective and innovative ways to combat age-related changes appear. One of them is microneedling.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a procedure in which, after applying nutritional serums with a special tool, many pricks of the surface of the skin of the face or body are made. The active ingredients in a serum penetrate through the punctures, which leads to the activation of recovery processes (therefore, the procedure is sometimes called collagen-stimulating therapy).

The procedure is used for various purposes:

  • To combat age-related changes, restore tone, rejuvenate the skin;
  • To reduce pigmentation, correction of surface and other cosmetic defects;
  • To stimulate hair growth;
  • For the treatment of cellulite, stretch marks, cicatricial deformities of the skin.

Microneedling is performed using a special device - a dermapen, the surface of which is covered with a set of thin needles. Their number and length depend on the application. Their length ranges from 0.2 to 3 mm, which is incredibly small in comparison with the standard size of needles. This range in length provides various intensities: from superficial to deep exposure, depending on the need.

  • 2-1 mm - short needles have a surface effect, suitable for face care
  • 1.5 mm - considered medium, have an effect on deep age wrinkles and cellulite
  • 2-3 mm - long needles affect the deeper layers, are used to affect cellulite, stretch marks and scars

The Procedure Is Carried Out In Several Stages

The dermapen used in the microneedling procedure is similar to a roller massager with microneedles. They are different sizes and vary both in the width of the roller itself and in the number and size of microneedles.

  • The first stage includes cleansing of the client’s skin from cosmetics, disinfection, and the application of anesthetic (optional).
  • The second stage is the application of a special serum to the skin of the treated area, which is selected based on the individual characteristics and needs of the skin. Active substances usually include hyaluronic acid, collagen, peptides, vitamins, various extracts and stimulants.
  • The third stage is the “pricking” of the skin using the dermapen over the treatment area.
  • At the end of the procedure, the skin is cleansed again, and then a soothing mask and a healing cream are applied.

A session can last up to 60 minutes depending on the size of the treated area. For a few days following the procedure, it is recommended to avoid using cosmetics and exposure to direct sunlight, not to visit the sauna, pool, or tanning salon.

Microneedling Benefits for Skin

First, the Permeability of The Skin Increases by 85%. Instead of old, amorphous fibers, a young and elastic collagen is created which forms strong skin structure.

Secondly, rapid tissue regeneration occurs. Tissue stimulation by the dermapen creates the activity of fibroblasts, which contributes to the synthesis of intercellular matrix substances.

Thirdly, a process called neo-angiogenesis takes place. New blood vessels form in the damaged skin, which improve cellular metabolism, respiration of cells and their nutrition. The formation of new blood vessels improves skin color and its external characteristics.

The use of a dermapen provides the penetration of nutrients in the serum into the deep layers of the epidermis, which guarantees a comprehensive effect on the skin.

Microneedling hence results in the following:

  • The signs of skin aging are reduced: sagging, wrinkles, etc.;
  • Cosmetic defects go away: enlarged pores, rashes, age spots, etc.;
  • Skin surface is leveled, and the procedure is effective for the correction of stretch marks, cellulite and even deep scars and lesions;
  • The general condition of the skin improves
  • Active hair growth is restored.

The effectiveness of the procedure is comparable to mesotherapy, but microneedling allows for control of the depth of exposure. This ensures a low level of skin injury, which reduces the risk of infections and shortens the recovery period of the skin.

For best results, the procedure should be carried out as a treatment course, the frequency of sessions is approximately once every 4-8 weeks, the exact number of procedures is determined by a skin care specialist. The visible effect will appear after 3-4 sessions.
